With the age of lunar tourism creeping ever closer I got to thinking; what the Hell would I do up there anyway? The truth is that at first sight there doesn’t seem to be an awful lot to do on the Moon. Sure, the Sea of Tranquillity sounds like a great resort town with heated pools and swim up bars but it’s really not. So what are the top things to do on the Moon?

Stuff Left Behind by Astronauts

You don’t think that the astronauts took all their crap back home with them, do you? Find the places where spaceships landed in the past and you can find bags full of astronaut poop, boots, cameras, blankets and golf balls. There are also apparently 5 American flags up there, as well as a commemorative plaque and a gold olive branch. Of course, if you don’t believe that we went there in the first place then the absence of all this stuff would be the proof you have been looking for. Unless the Government craftily sends up all of this garbage before the first lunar tourists arrive.

Look for Crashed Spacecraft

It has been calculated that human waste on the Moon runs to 200 tons. Good lord, that is a lot of astronaut poop and golf balls. Actually, the majority of this waste comes in the form of spacecraft that have crashed into the lunar surface, either on purpose or by accident. There are dozens of craft sitting on the surface of the Moon. The oldest is the Russian Luna 2 craft that landed there on purpose in 1959. At the time of writing the most recent landing was by the USA’s LADDEE in 2014.

Look at the Earth

Earth as seen from the moon

Can you even imagine standing on the Moon and looking back at Earth? That would be such a creepy sensation. This could be the setting of the best selfie in the world ever. I’ve always wondered how clearly you would be able to identify different places from up there. I have to admit that when I’m flying over my home town in a low flying plane I can’t ever make out a single thing I recognise, so I don’t expect to be able to spot many places from the Moon.

Recreate the Famous Photos

Who could resist the chance to recreate those famous photos from the Moon landings? This would also give you another chance to prove that those landings never really happened on the lunar surface, if you weren’t convinced by the poop, the flags and the golf balls earlier on. Stick in the flagpole and see whether it sways about after you have done it. Then you can try and take photos that appear to have shadows from multiple light sources.

Be Young Again (Maybe)

Less stress on the moon

The Moon has a level of gravity that is about a sixth of that on good old Earth. This is good for jumping about and for hitting golf balls a long way and it is also great for the hearts of older space travellers. You see, there is a lot less strain put on the heart when you are in an environment with such low gravity. Maybe we’ll all find the secret of eternal youth on the Moon.
