David of Watch Mojo walks down the video gaming memory lane and looks back on the five most controversial video games of the 90s that captured the spotlights of media and one particular game even prompted the US Congress to start formulating the ESRB ratings system. It’s odd how people had hotly wrangled about these videos because of certain elements that can now be commonly found in today’s typical video game.

David’s post points to graphic violence as manifested in guns, gore and carnage; the inclusion of nudity, indecency and even rape; and references to Nazism, Satanism as the main grounds for argument by appalled parents and authorities against these video games. He describes how these elements were included in the video games he mentioned.

According to David:

You may not realize it, but elements found in the standard game today cause quite the uproar when they made their first appearance. Today we’re taking a look at the top 5 controversial video games of the 90s.

5.  Lethal Enforcers

4.  Mortal Kombat

3.  Wolfenstein 3D and Doom

2.  Night Trap

1.  Grand Theft Auto

After a decade of exposure to these unpopular video game elements, the uproar had died down as we have become accustomed to them. But these video games have continued to proliferate, some more shocking than ever. Does their growing presence mean that these elements are after all acceptable, or have our morals become callused and indifferent through time and exposure? Think about it.
