Going to the cinema to see the latest movie is one of those thrilling events which never loses it shine. Just think how much more exciting it would be it you did it in one of the strangest cinemas in the world next time.

The Archipelago Cinema, Thailand

The Strangest Cinemas in the World

Possibly the most dramatic cinema in the world, the Archipelago Cinema in Thailand is a floating movie theatre next to the jungle and in front of some giant rocks jutting out of the sea. It was built for a local film festival and was inspired by the rafts used by local lobster fishermen.

The End of the World Cinema, Egypt

Strangest Cinemas in the World

If you were wandering through the barren desert of the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt then the one thing you would really, really want to do is sit down and see a good movie. This strange cinema is utterly weird because of its location in the middle of nowhere. You can check it out on Google Maps and see just how far it is from civilisation. Sadly, the generator was sabotaged for the opening show and no movies have ever been screened here.

Sol Cinema, Wales

Strangest Cinemas in the WorldI’m going to be painfully honest here and admit that I don’t know how fierce competition is for the title of Smallest Solar Movie Theatre in the World. For all I know there are dozens of Greeks, Aussies and Mexicans vying for this title constantly. All I know is that the current holder of this wonderful claim to fame is the Sol Cinema in Wales. 16 people can squeeze in if they all hold their breath during the 10 minutes every presentation lasts for. There are plans for the caravan movie theatre to travel Europe soon.

Hollywood Forever Cemetery, US

Strangest Cinemas in the World

If there is one thing better than watching a classic film it is watching a classic film being projected onto the wall of a cemetery where people like Peter Finch and Rudolph Valentino are buried. Why? I honestly don’t know. It just is. You can even see a late night horror movie here if you dare.

A Back Room in Uyuni, Bolivia

Strangest Cinemas in the World

This is a personal recollection I have. Once I was in the remote, bitterly cold Bolivian town of Uyuni wondering what to do until falling asleep. Someone told me I could watch a movie in the place across the street. To this day I still don’t know if it was some kind person’s house or some sort of clandestine theatre where they possibly stored moonshine out the back. The fact they sold me a cup of hot tea made me think it was the latter. The picture above is of the town’s abandoned cinema.

4DX, Seoul, South Korea

Strangest Cinemas in the World

On those special occasions when 3D is 1D too little you can get the full 4D experience in Seoul. This is the original 4D movie theatre, with wind, movement, water and smells thrown into the mix. Be careful what film you choose here. These places are now popular all over the country and further afield.

Electric Cinema, London, UK

Strangest Cinemas in the World

Do you know those days when all you want to do is go the cinema and lie down in a plush bed? No? You really need to try it sometime soon. Electric Cinema in London has lots of comfy leather armchair seats and 6 double beds with cashmere blankets. You might never go home again.
