Many times a homeowner overlooks one way to increase their living space which can be done by remodeling the garage. There are so many different things you can do with this space – create a bedroom or perhaps a game room for the whole family to enjoy.

One of the first things to find out is if your area requires you to a have a building permit; the reasons for this vary but some of the issues may include: structural soundness, windows/ventilation, insulation, electrical, exits and plumbing. Be sure not to skip this step in finding out if one is required as some places will fine you and/or require that you restore the area to its original condition if you decide to try to sell your home.

Then you need to decide exactly what you have to work with in terms of the walls, entries and floor. Generally there is a cement floor which is conducive to pretty much most any kind of flooring that you wish to install. Just be sure to seal the cement before doing any covering and if you use carpeting it may be wise to invest in some kind of double padding as it will help make it more comfortable and will help with insulation as well.

Next you should consider you choices for the ceiling, depending upon what you plan to use the space for you have options such as an exposed beam ceiling, tray ceiling, vaulted ceiling, drop ceiling or even a drywall ceiling.

Your next consideration is the walls; again you have many choices such as sheetrock or paneling. Or, you may want to construct some walls out of an insulated boarding, which is perfect if you are planning to use it as a game or play room or even as a home office.

Finally you will need to decide whether you want to hire a contractor to complete the remodel or do it yourself. Some choose to hire contractors for only part of the work such as the plumbing or electrical if you are not experienced in that area and then choose to do the rest yourself.
