Many die hard John Wayne fans likely feel that even contemplating seeing the remake of his 1969 movie True Grit would be something close to sacra religious since no one can fill the Duke’s shoes; however, this remake actually seems to pay homage to the classic rather than trying to re-invent the genre.
After the success of their 2007 movie No Country For Old Men, Joel and Ethan Coen decided to tackle another one and thus the remake of True Grit began. With its somewhat hokey characters and a sometimes quirky storyline it is not hard to understand why they chose this particular movie as it plays directly to their particular filmmaking skills including the use of scenic, vibrant scenery along with mostly savory and hard boiled dialogue.
Most of the critics agree that the film is dominated by Jeff Bridges who plays John Wayne’s character Rooster Cogburn and Hailee Steinfeld who plays Mattie Ross, the 14 year old who is seeking justice for the cold blooded killing of her father. However, Josh Brolin also turns in an excellent performance as the cowardly killer.
Overall this film delivers exactly what most people are looking for in a good western, especially the remake of one as famous as True Grit including its edgy but somewhat poetic dialogue and of course you can’t leave out those epic gunfights; a definite must see for Western movie fans.
