I love nature, I really do. Heck, I even hugged a tree once. However, what I love best is to look around the planet and find weird and wonderful acts of nature.

The Marble Caves of Chile

Weird Nature and The Marble Caves of Chile

Carrera Lake is in Chile, quite close to the Argentine border. To be fair, most of Chile is quite close to the Argentine border, so don’t use that description alone to guide you there. Anyway, thousands of year’s worth of erosion by the waves of the lake have caused some stunning marble caves in the area.

The Red Tides of Florida

Weird Nature and The Red Tides of Florida

The Gulf Coast of Florida has a weird natural phenomenon which occurs from time to time. It involves algae blooming and turning the sea into a fantastic red coloured sheet of water.

The Dead Sea

Weird Nature and The Dead Sea

I hate swimming but if there is one place I would like to get in the water it is in the Dead Sea, on the border between Israel and Jordan. This is the lowest point on the surface of the planet and the amount of salt in the water means that even the least buoyant swimmers can float in it easily. It sounds like my kind of place, to be honest.

The Sliding Rocks of Racetrack Playa in California

Weird Nature and The Sliding Rocks of Racetrack Playa in California

This is a pretty strange piece of strange nature in California. In a place called Racetrack Playa rocks move on their own. Or at least, we think they do. You see, no one has ever seen these sliding rocks in action. There are no human or animal tracks next to the rocks which have trails in the ground behind them, leading some people to say that they move like this solely due to high winds and a light coating of ice on the ground.

The Spotted Lake in British Columbia

Weird Nature and The Spotted Lake in British Columbia

The first time I saw the Spotted Lake near Osoyoos I thought it was a Photoshop job. This is one weird body of water but it is completely natural. The technical explanation for this stunning display is that most of the water dries up in the summer months and the mineral deposits in the lake become visible.

The Moeraki Boulders in New Zealand

Weird Nature and The Moeraki Boulders in New Zealand

I don’t know about you but I love weird shaped rocks which occur naturally. These ones are in New Zealand and look amazing. There is probably a theory that aliens made them but I am putting this one down to weird nature as well.

The Stone Forest in China

Weird Nature and The Stone Forest in China

There are some absolutely believable natural landscapes in China and this is one of the best ones. Giant rocks appear to rise up from the ground like tall buildings. Once I’ve had a float in the Dead Sea I definitely want to go here as well.

The Coloured Lakes in Bolivia

Weird Nature and The Coloured Lakes in Bolivia

One of the best bits of weird nature I have seen is in Bolivia. If you go on a trip to the giant salt lake in Uyuni then you will also pass some amazing lakes which are unexpected colours. There are green and red lakes here and each one looks spectacular. The colour changes during the day, the flamingos come and go and the high altitude, desert type landscape helps make it feel like nowhere else on Earth.
