Have you ever wanted to get away from it all for a while? If you have then a stay in one of the most isolated houses on Earth could be just what you need.
The Church on a Pillar
This is a natural limestone pillar in Georgia, called Katskhi Pillar. It is 40 metres high and while it is technically a church on top of it, there is lonely monk who lives in a hermit cell there. An iron ladder leads up to the top but only men are allowed climb up it.
The Island Home in Iceland
If living in a church on top of a pillar in Georgia isn’t remote enough for you then what about moving to this house? It is on an island to the south west of Iceland and is one of the most isolated houses in the world by the looks of it. Some internet sites say that the Icelandic government bizarrely gifted this island and house to the singer Bjork, while others will tell you that this is a complete lie.
The Really Isolated House
Can you imagine living in a house like this? At least you wouldn’t need to worry too much about the neighbours dropping by unexpectedly for a cup of tea. I can see some form of cattle scattered about the land here, so at least you could start talking to them to keep you sane.
The Island House
Of course, the really, really isolated houses on the planet are made even more inaccessible due to being on islands. This one looks like a fun place to stay, if you like being completely alone and counting the trees on your tiny island as a way of passing the time.
The Remote House
Can you imagine how annoying it would be to be a delivery guy in this place? You could walk for hours out to this isolated house and then find that no one is home. Actually, I wonder what security measures you need to take when you are away from home for a long time here. I guess being miles from freaking anywhere helps cut down on burglary statistics but who are you going to ask to water your plants and feed Tiddles when you’re away?
The House Next to the Blooming Big Forest
I have a feeling that this picture might be a little deceptive. While there is a thumping great forest on one side of it, I can’t help thinking that there might be a bunch of houses or a small city on the other side of it.
The Really Small Island House
There is one very clever way of making sure that you have one of the world’s most isolated houses. Just build it in the middle of a river on an island barely big enough for it and absolutely nothing else. This cool but remote home is on an island called Just Room Enough Island. It’s arguably the smallest island in the planet and sits on the St Lawrence River between the US and Canada.
The Remote Swedish House
The Swedish capital of Stockholm is a big place but you don’t need to travel too far outside it to find this kind of glorious seclusion. This is a modern house built on an isolated island and looks ideal for anyone who wants to run away from civilisation for a while.
