Eddie Pells of the Associated Press recounts the poignant exits of Andy Roddick and Roger Federer from the Flushing Meadows. He contrasted Federer’s temporary goodbye to Roddick’s definitive adieu after both tennis aces lost to Tomas Berdych and Juan Martin del Potro, respectively. Federer would most likely be back in the game next year, but Roddick has decided to make this year’s championship his last.
Pells described this momentous tennis event as “an emotion-filled afternoon that morphed into a shocker of an evening…” (click to expand) The drama which begun in the courts carried on later that night during the separate press conferences of the losers. While Federer seemed to have wanted the conference to end already with his clipped replies to questions about the victory of Berdych, Roddick took his time answering questions thrown at him, reminiscing about his first visit to Flushing Meadows. After all, it was the last day of his career as a pro tennis player.
Besides the heart-rending goodbyes, Pells also gave a rundown of the rest of the first champions of the 2012 US Open.
