Although most movie theaters offer pretty standard fare both in movies and decorating there are still a few across America that have something a little different to offer.  Whether it is décor reminiscent of times gone by or something very hi-tech, there is a theater for everyone.

Alamo Drafthouse, Austin, TX – everything from jalapeno poppers, gourmet pizza and numerous cocktails to great cinema makes this theater stand out. Film aficionados, both the unknown and the well known (like Quentin Tarantino) come from all over just to have the Alamo Drafthouse experience.

Film Forum, New York City – this little theater between Greenwich Village and Soho offers both entertainment and education. It is a non-profit organization that has a wide selection of films from breakthrough Indies to foreign documentaries, something for everyone.

Grauman’s Chinese Theater, Hollywood, CA – ok this one may not be in the top group for showing movies; however tourists love standing around in the forecourt comparing foot and hand prints to the many Hollywood icons.

The Senator Theatre, Baltimore, MD – this art deco theater only has the one screen but this 70 year old theater is on the National Register of Historic Places and has had many famous movie goers such as John Travolta, Barry Levinson and Matt Damon.

The Tampa Theater, Tampa, FL – This movie theater opened in 1926 with a wonderful Mediterranean and epicurean design, both outside and in, has captivated audiences for decades. It was almost closed down in the 1970’s but fortunately Florida movie fans couldn’t stand the thought of losing their beloved theater and were able to raise what was needed in order to save it.

The Music Box Theater, Chicago, IL – while most of the movie theaters, especially in this area, show many action packed (think Iron Man and Transformers) movies this one has some foreign and independent films that make it one of a kind.

The ArcLight Cinema, Hollywood, CA – some have compared it to the “golf ball” at the Epcot center but it is just the Cinerama Dome that was originally built in the 1960’s (it has since been renovated to include 14 screens). Perhaps one of the most distinguishing features that separate it from other movie theaters is that it has assigned seating, so you don’t have to try to save 5 more seats for when your friends finally show up.

There are definitely other noteworthy movie theaters out there so get out and go see a flick.
