Nuclear power plant in Cattenom, France

The failure of nuclear power plants is not a pleasant thought.  The aftermath is even worse, knowing that the consequences can be felt for decades.  Should a nuclear power plant catastrophically fail, there are things you should know and things you should do to protect you and your loved ones.  Please start by following the news for the latest information.

If there is a major release there is a high probability it will reach parts of the U.S. The northwest is likely because of usual wind patterns. But the jet stream sometimes moves very far south almost to Mexico.  Rainfall is a bad thing in this situation as it causes greater amounts of radiation to reach the ground.

In the 1970s China conducted some above ground nuclear tests despite protests. Radiation traveled across the U.S. Much of the impact was hidden from the public.  Just one thing that came out was that milk in Pennsylvania was showing substantial increases in radiation. But little was said lest people become upset.

The one effective thing we can do if significant radiation reaches our shores is to prevent our thyroid gland from absorbing radiation.  This is done by taking potassium iodide, sold under different names. This morning I visited two pharmacies. Neither carried the needed products.

A huge run on potassium iodide is underway.  Even in Finland huge amounts are being ordered.  Type into your browser the word THYROSAFE. This is the government approved product. This morning they were out of Thyrosafe (pill form) but do have Thyroshield which is the same thing in liquid form.

I suggest you consider ordering some soon. Estimated delivery time is 3 to 5 days. The company is trying to keep up but is struggling. They did send 50 thousand doses to Japan. If the need for thyroid protection should become needed here it could be very difficult to obtain.

One bottle will last 2 weeks for an adult, 30 days for a child. Hopefully that will be enough time for the bulk of the radiation to have passed or dissipated.

If it turns out you need to use it, don’t take it until just before the arrival of the radiation, perhaps 24 hours.
If you are taking any kind of thyroid medication contact a health professional and find out what your situation is. Can you, should you take Thyrosafe-potassium iodide?

If you order it and don’t need it, that would be a very good thing.  I understand it can be stored for a long time in your refrigerator. From the same site I purchased a simple radiation monitor, a type of badge. (I have a certain mistrust of the gov’t being frank and truthful with the public. I have witnessed governmental deception in situations I am familiar with.)

Take care, and stay safe.
