You have undoubtedly heard the phrase “the shot heard around the world…” well, now we have “the news heard around the world” and it is good news indeed: nearly a decade after the infamous 9/11 attacks the FBI has changed the caption under their most wanted poster on Osama bin Laden to “Deceased”.

It has been reported that the Al Qaeda leader was shot in the head during a United States helicopter raid that took place close to Islamabad (the Pakistani capital) today. United States officials tell us that after a 40 minute fight in a million dollar compound in the military’s garrison town of Abbottabad, Osama bin Laden was among several of the people that were killed. Pentagon officials have not stated the exact forms of identification used to identify the body, rather stating there were “multiple methods” used to positively identify his body.

According to sources this compound was discovered in August and has been kept under surveillance giving the CIA a chance to figure out exactly who was living inside the compound where no phone lines or internet lines were found, the residents burned their trash rather than leaving it out for collection, and had walls as high as 18 feet, topped with barbed wire, in several places. The conclusion that they kept arriving at was that the person had to be Osama bin Laden.

Once they decided who was living there they had to decide how to get to him; the obvious choice was the Navy’s elite SEAL Team Six, a top military counter-terrorism unit. Under extremely secretive conditions the team was placed under the direct command of Leon Panetta, director of the CIA who transformed his conference room in the command center.

While the details of the raid remain a little gray at this point, the al-Qaida courier that had been under surveillance, his brother and a son of bin Laden was among those killed. All that has been said by officials is that bin Laden “resisted” but the final result was that the man who was responsible for the worst act of terrorism in the United States died by an American bullet in his head.
