Wasn’t the 2014 World Cup a fantastic event? We enjoyed some amazing moments during the tournament and if your memories of it are starting to fade then here are some of the best and worst moments for you to live all over again.

The Suarez Bite

Best and Worst Soccer World Cup 2014 Moments

The moment when this happened was just incredibly surreal. Uruguayan forward Luis Suarez went to the ground clutching his teeth while Italian defender Giorgio Chellini frantically tried to show the referree the bite mark on his shoulder. Uruguay won the game. Suarez got banned from going near a football stadium for 4 months and then got transferred to Barcelona for a huge sum of money.

The Giant Insect

Best and Worst Soccer World Cup 2014 Moments

You might not even have noticed this bizarre World Cup moment at the time. As Columbian star James Rodriguez went to take a penalty against Brazil a giant and rather scary insect landed on his arm. He scored the penalty, Brazil won the game and he got a big transfer to Real Madrid. I have no idea what happened to the insect, although I fear the worst.

The Costa Rican Adventure

Best and Worst Soccer World Cup 2014 Moments

We all love to see the underdog upset the odds, don’t we? In the 2014 World Cup Costa Rica turned into everyone’s favourite second team with a string of stirring performances against higher rated teams. They got through a tough group containing 3 former World Cup winners and made their country proud of them along the way.

The Spanish Collapse

Best and Worst Soccer World Cup 2014 Moments

I have to confess that Spain were my team for the Cup. Having lived there for a couple of years I fell in love with the tiki taka way of playing and felt sure that they would blow away the rest of the teams again. Sadly, it all fell apart right from the start, as the Dutch tore them apart by five goals to one.  The most sensational moment of all was when Robin Van Persie hurtled through the air to score one of the tournament’s most inconic goals.

The Argentine Coach Falls Over

Best and Worst Soccer World Cup 2014 Moments

This was one of the best light hearted moments of the 2014 World Cup. Argentine coach Alejandro Sabella was watching his team battle against Belgium when he got so caught up in the action that he leaned way, way back and then toppled over backwards.

The Unbelievable Semi Final

Best and Worst Soccer World Cup 2014 Moments

This was probably the strangest game of soccer I have ever seen in my life. I walked into a bar to watch the semi final between Brazil and Germany. The game had already started and it looked like a number 5 next to Germany’s name on the screen. What on Earth had I missed in the first half hour or so? It was a bizarre atmosphere in the place, as everyone just watched the game in silence and disbelief. Will we ever see a game like this again?

The Final Goal

Best and Worst Soccer World Cup 2014 MomentsWith my usual track record of backing the wrong horse I was right behind Argentina for the final. It wasn’t the best game ever but it was hugely interesting. The game was finally won by a brilliant goal from subsitute Mario Gotze . Most people seem to agree that the best team won the tournament. Roll on 2018.
